Once the reserve of students and thrifty fashion-lovers, shopping second-hand has undergone a fairly radical shift over the last decade when it comes to public perception. While the democratising impact of social media has undoubtedly played a part, there’s also the It-girl effect, which has seen big-name stars, such as Kendall Jenner, Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid, championing pre-loved fashion: whether it’s at a red carpet event or on holiday with friends. These trend-setters have dug into the archives of brands such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Versace, Dior and Chanel, and created looks that, ironically, feel wholly contemporary and, by dint of their scarcity, truly aspirational, too.

The latest evidence of vintage fashion’s growing desirability? Vestiaire Collective’s exclusive Archive collection, which drops today. Comprising of 80 rare archive pieces from some of the A-listers’s favourite brands – think Jean Paul Gaultier, Hermès and Maison Margiela – and including versions of the pieces that Kendall Jenner has worn herself, it is a must-see for vintage fanatics and newbies alike.

“From Jean-Paul Gaultier’s ultimate crop marinière to early Martin Margiela pieces, this unique sale is a testament to fashion that lasts”, explains Sophie Hersan, Co-Founder & Style Director at Vestiaire Collective. “This exceptional collection has never been presented before, and this is how we promote creativity and rarity”.

Focusing on the ’80s and ’90s, highlights from the collection include rare knitwear designs from Martin Margiela’s era-defining autumn/winter 1989 collection and some of the original “cyber dot” pieces from Jean-Paul Gaultier’s fall/winter 1995 show (you might recognise them, as last year celebs rushed to get their hands on the brand’s re-worked “cyber” collection). And while we probably don’t need to remind you, when these gems are gone – they really are gone. Is archival fashion the future of high-luxury? Here’s hoping.
